About Meagan Murphy

Meagan Murphy incorporates asymmetry, rhythm, and emotion in her depiction of nature. She uses techniques from the masters of Abstract Expressionism to reimage the mundane. Her focus is on the musicality of art, color, and form development. 

Originally from Sioux City, Iowa, Meagan moved to Chicago to pursue her passion for art. In 2003, she graduated from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and a concentration in painting and drawing. She studied under well-known and respected teachers. Frank Piatek guided her interest in Russian Constructivism. Chicago Imagists Barbara Rossi and Karl Wirsum ignited her passion for color and shape.

Borrowing from Cubism, Suprematism, and Futurism, Meagan seeks to avoid traditional artistic composition. German artists that reference Marx (materialism and alchemism) have influenced her style. She uses the same methods for deconstructing the ideas of mainstream society in her art.

Eight years ago, Megan moved to Seattle, a community that allowed her to blossom as an artist. Currently, she studies art at Gage Academy and printmaking at Pratt Fine Arts. She has an art studio at Inscape Arts. Her hobbies include other art forms like poetry and the performing arts. Adamant about social activism, she is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. She is also a member of Radical Women Seattle and a contributor to their Facebook live-streaming sessions.
